I wonder what effect this will have on Java?

Yes big discussion about it at JGO http://www.javagaming.org/index.php/topic,20314.msg164074/

Java I believe will be fine, but JavaFX, JOGL or so could be effected negative. Just have to wait and see...

Sun never understood how to promote Java for the desktop. Oracle can't do any worse. JavaFX is DOA anyway IMHO. It's one of SUNs usual "me to"-approaches, that nobody from outside the Java community is going to use and that comes 5 years late at least.

I saw that on AP news today. JSE has come a long way in speed since 1.4 IMHO, but some other things are still stupid and annoying (think JNLP security). I hope ORACLE fixes issues, considering they have survived, so they have thinking that makes sense.

I wonder about the future of JavaFX. Sun has been pushing JavaFX, continuing to update it. I would think that Sun has talked to ORACLE about what ORACLE wants to do with JFX, and if it was "trash that thing" I don't think Sun would continue on with JavaFX. I didn't read the whole press release, so maybe this talk with ORACLE was spur of the moment. All interesting to me.

It might have had a chance if they would have come out with a visual environment that was extremely easy to use like Flash and cheaper, but they really aren't good at marketing to individuals.  They have made some improvements lately, like automatic updates.  Anyway, Flash is the defacto standard and nothing much is going to change that.  I don't know how so many people can afford it, though.  I think it's too pricey, but Flex has some free solutions.  Java still has a lot of advantages in that it's a good server side language and can be used for both desktop and browser.  There really aren't any other languages like that.

I like Sun and overall I like the things they make a do(mostly JSP script was bad). But almost everything after Java release was very non friendly. They didn't seem to understand how to market for people rather than marketing for themselves. They in all honsetly forgot about the people than the product. It's sad that this is happening, but it's also not unexpected.

They never solved the JRE speed issue. Applets were fine, but they were so slow to load. They really should have designed some form of minimum JApplet RE for browsers. Instead 70mb isntalls for a JRE is rather large without much useful web stuff.

JavaFX is a good idea, but it's built on the 70mb JRE. So what's the point. And the JRE consumer edition I never really saw much of. I think Sun should have provided something that Flash didn't. A true extension to webpages rather than just an additional java layer. Essentially making a proper Java Script rather than the kamak? kemack? or whatever script JS is based on.

Well, with the more current version, they did something regarding the size problem: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/6u10faq.jsp#JKernel

I was reading over that. I didn't realize so many things have been improved, but too late for a large impact.

Yes. What you actually need if you want to make an impression to Flash users is:

  • Hide the name "Java" as good a as possible
  • Deliver an easy to use GUI for JavaFX

Both things won't happen...
