I'm still guessing the exception is thrown due to context pause/resume/change but I'm not entirely sure.

Neither am I, but I don't see what else it could be ATM. I've seen similar things happening with my stuff. Quite a lot of crashes reported by Google Play seem to happen at these stages rather than during normal operation.
